Responding Assertively to Threatening Behaviour at Work
A 2 day workshop
The Oxford Dictionary definition of “threat”…
“ A declaration of the intention to inflict harm, pain or misery… an indication of imminent harm, danger or pain”.
Overview:
This workshop aims to enable all participants to:
- Understand the nature and source of threatening behaviour
- Determine the physical and psychological responses to threat
- Examine a range of behavioural responses and practise the skills of responding assertively in threatening situations
Specific outcomes: As a result of attending the workshop all participants will have –
- Determined the reasons why we behave as we do
- Examined sources of anger/violence and the anger cycle
- Differentiated between Aggressive, Passive and Assertive behaviours
- Developed practical ways of dealing with bullying and harassment by choosing appropriate behavioural responses
- Recognised the importance of non-verbal behaviour and the need for acute observation
- Learnt to control and deal with own and others anger and emotions
- Devised a range of conflict management strategies that work
- Developed practical strategies for ensuring own personal safety at work
- An understanding of issues and reactions after a threatening event and be able to deal effectively and appropriately
Style and approach.
Both days will be run as practical workshops. They will be lively and participative with the tutor in the role of process facilitator. A series of carefully structured questionnaires, case studies and exercises are used throughout to validate and reinforce the learning. All participants will complete both learning logs and a summative action plan

Increasing Personal Effectiveness : Say what you mean without being mean when you say it!
A 2 day Workshop (with optional review)
Overall Scope and objectives.
To enable participants to recognise the importance of effective interpersonal relationships when managing for results.
- To provide participants with an overview of assertiveness and begin the process of developing a more assertive style.
- To increase awareness of influencing behaviours and be able to use verbal techniques to assist in the achievement of win -for- all outcomes.
- To enable participants to recognise the benefits of constructive conflict when attempting to solve problems and find creative ways of improving relationships.
- To enhance understanding of the role of feedback in effective management.
- To develop the appropriate communication skills to ensure feedback as a cultural norm.
Specific outcomes. All participants will be able to:
- Identify behaviours and understand why we get stuck in behaviour patterns, which are inappropriate/ineffective.
- Recognise assertiveness, aggression and passivity in self and others.
- Identify the effects of the three behaviours on desired outcomes.
- Recognise a range of body language “cues” which enable more accurate access to the real meaning.
- Understand the impact of learned behaviours on our responses to conflict.
- Identify and relate to own preferred style when responding to conflict and commit to changes as appropriate.
- Deal effectively with a range of conflict situations using case study exercises.
- Determine what feedback is and how to communicate different types of feedback appropriately.
- Recognise habitual behaviour patterns and styles that influence/determine the ways in which we work.
- Commit to a structured action plan for continued development back at work.
Style and Approach.
Recognising that adults prefer to learn in an atmosphere of active participation, formal tuition is kept to a reasonable minimum. A series of carefully planned and structured case studies, questionnaires and exercises are used throughout to ensure maximum participation and to reinforce and validate key learning points.
Workshop Review (optional)
This 2-day workshop can be followed by an optional one-day review. The purpose of this day would be to conduct a thorough review of all learning, action plans and practical application in the workplace. Additional learning determined specifically by the needs of the group will support this throughout. The review would be likely to take place about one month after the initial workshop so the specific learning requirements can be captured during the interim period.

Managing Self (a 2-day workshop)
Scope and Objectives.
To explore learning and learning/thinking styles and develop commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- To determine the impact of organisational change and gain commitment to collective accountability for shaping the business going forward.
- To explore the role of the manager and determine the differences between leadership and management
- To agree on the most effective ways of managing key resources in the changing business environment.
- To provide the manager with the skills and confidence to develop their position as leader of a working group.
- To enable participants to recognise the importance of effective interpersonal relationships when managing for results.
- To practise new behaviours and identify how they will apply these in their work and life in general.
Manage the Team (a 2-day workshop)
Scope and Objectives..
- To further reinforce the role of the manager as leader of a team.
- To ensure acceptance of accountability for building a committed, cohesive and self-directed working team.
- To determine ways in which the manager can successfully identify the causes of problems, determine appropriate solutions and make quality decisions when deciding upon “best balanced choice” outcomes
Manage the Task (a 2-day workshop)
Scope and Objectives
- To determine the impact of organisational culture on the ways in which we work and explore the values underpinning the culture in the workplace.
- To enable participants to develop ways of maximising time by setting realistic objectives, planning thoroughly to achieve these objectives, by being able to prioritise and schedule effectively and to delegate appropriately.
- To develop a clear understanding of the key factors which create and sustain a willingness to work.
- To recognise the role of effective communication when getting the job done and to be able to select communication methods appropriate to the issues and contexts.
All 3 modules will be run as participative workshops with the emphasis on learning by doing. Using accelerated learning techniques; the tutor is mainly in the role of facilitator of the learning process. The modules are spread over an agreed period with sufficient gaps between to allow for reflection and reinforcement of the learning by practical application back at work. A one-day review is held which addresses validation of key learning issues, plus additional learning as determined by the group.
